Tigers set to announce Martin AFL deal

The Dustin Martin contract circus is over, with Richmond expected to announce on Monday night that he has signed a two-year AFL deal.

There have been widespread media reports that the Tigers will confirm at their best-and-fairest function that they have re-signed the troubled midfield star.

On September 16, Richmond effectively called Martin’s bluff following several months of talks.

They announced that Martin would consider offers from other clubs after negotiations broke down.

Melbourne, St Kilda and Greater Western Sydney were all linked to the 22-year-old, but ruled themselves out.

Martin flew to Sydney last week and had a tour of the Giants’ facilities before the club announced they would not try to recruit him.

His last potential option for leaving Punt Rd was denied on Sunday when Brisbane also announced they would not pursue a trade for Martin.

There is no doubting Martin’s ability, but he is considered an off-field risk.

He has played 86 games since his 2010 debut and polled 16 votes in this year’s Brownlow Medal.

Martin sat on the Tigers’ club table at the Brownlow count and is certain to feature prominently in the votes on Monday night for the club’s Jack Dyer Medal.
