Riewoldt boots four as Saints down Suns

St Kilda have dined out on an uncompetitive Gold Coast, skipper Nick Riewoldt booting four goals to help deliver coach Scott Watters a 92-point maiden AFL win.

The Saints dominated from the start to win 21.13 (139) to 7.5 (47) at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Experienced stars Brendon Goddard, Lenny Hayes, Nick Dal Santo were all among the Saints’ best, along with Riewoldt.

But perhaps even more heartening for St Kilda fans would have been the strong performances from hard-working, but less experienced pair Jack Steven (22 disposals, six tackles, one goal) and David Armitage (22 disposals, 10 tackles, two goals).

First-year player Terry Milera (two goals) also had some nice moments.

Armitage and Steven were important as St Kilda kicked five goals to none in the first quarter.

The Saints controlled the clearances and produced some fierce tackling and defensive pressure to keep the ball locked in their forward half.

The Suns did not score a goal until 11 minutes into the second quarter, by which stage they were already 40 points down.

They had been denied a major on video review in the first term, when a running shot by Matt Shaw was ruled to have been touched off the boot.

Saints Goddard and Rhys Stanley were also victims of the AFL’s introduction of review technology early in the second quarter.

Those denied goals and a couple of uncharacteristic missed shots by small forward Stephen Milne meant the home side’s lead was kept to 41 points at the main break.

But a seven-goal third term by the Saints extended that to 60 points at the last change and they piled on the first six goals of the final quarter.

Milne kicked two third-term goals, before being subbed off at the 20-minute mark.

Goddard, who played mostly a sweeping role across halfback, finished with a team-high 33 disposals.

That tally was eclipsed by Suns skipper Gary Ablett, who despite the close attention of Clint Jones, picked up 40 touches and two goals.

Ablett’s standout performance included the game’s two biggest highlights, a high-flying mark late in the first quarter and a brilliant running goal bursting from the centre early in the third.

Fellow Suns midfielder David Swallow was solid, with small defender Jarrod Harbrow also among Gold Coast’s best.
