McGrath five as Dogs down Lions in AFL

Returning veteran Ash McGrath kicked five goals to help fire Brisbane to a 18.6 (114) to 7.14 (56) AFL win over the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Wearing heritage jumpers to mark the club’s inaugural Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday night, the Lions controlled the game throughout and stormed home with 10 goals to two in the second half.

It gave them their third win in five games to lift them to a 5-7 record and ahead of the Bulldogs on percentage.

McGrath, back from a knee injury, combined his scoreboard contribution with stopping Bulldogs star defender Bob Murphy from having a major influence.

Tom Rockliff (40 disposals, two goals), Daniel Merrett (four goals) and Irishman Pearce Hanley also impressed.

The Lions started with three goals to nothing in the first nine minutes.

Merrett kicked two of those, on his way to three majors for the opening quarter, all from marks, as Brisbane charged to a 22-point lead at the first change.

The Dogs closed the gap to 17 points at halftime, helped by a goal to Murphy from a 50m penalty late in the half.

They could have increased the pressure early in the third period, but Shaun Higgins and Adam Cooney both missed set shots.

That proved costly, the Lions not scoring for the first 10 minutes of the quarter, before piling on four goals to none to build a commanding 37-point lead by the last change.

Rockliff kicked the final two goals of the term in a two-minute burst, the second coming after the midfielder outmarked Dogs key defender Mark Austin on the edge of the goalsquare.

The Lions started celebrating after starting the last quarter with three goals in five minutes, including a running shot from Daniel Rich from inside the centre square.

The Bulldogs’ first goal of the second half did not come until 15 minutes into the term, by which stage they were 65 points down.

The Dogs were hurt by the failure of their tall forwards to have any impact and they could not apply enough pressure to restrict Brisbane’s slick running game.

Tom Liberatore and Daniel Cross battled hard in the midfield for the Bulldogs, while first-gamer Tom Campbell was solid in the ruck and veteran defender Brian Lake performed well on Jonathan Brown.

The Lions lost key defender Matt Maguire to an arm injury in the first quarter.
