Masten hurt at West Coast training

West Coast are hopeful Chris Masten will be fit for round one of the AFL season despite the midfielder copping a knock to his face on Wednesday.

Masten was set to undergo scans on Thursday afternoon to determine whether he’d sustained any fracture during the training mishap.

But a club spokesman was confident of a positive outcome that would free Masten to take part in the April 1 clash with the Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

Masten has yet to establish himself in West Coast’s midfield despite notching 54 games since being snared with pick No.3 at the 2007 national draft.

But the 22-year-old looked to have turned the corner over the summer, starring during West Coast’s run to the pre-season grand final.

Should Masten be ruled out for round one, the selection chances for the likes of Koby Stevens, Ashton Hams, Tom Swift, Patrick McGinnity and Brad Sheppard will improve dramatically.

West Coast enjoyed a dream run on the injury front last year.

But their luck hasn’t been nearly as good in 2012, with 2010 club champion Mark LeCras (knee) already ruled out for the year, and fellow forward Mark Nioski (hamstring) set to miss a large chunk of the season.

Power forwards Quinten Lynch (hamstring) and Josh Kennedy (foot) have also been troubled during the pre-season, but are expected to front up against the Bulldogs.
