The Brisbane Lions are closely monitoring the health of defender Harris Andrews after he was diagnosed with internal bleeding following a sickening hit from Jeremy Cameron.

Andrews was rushed to hospital in the hours following Saturday’s 27-point loss to Greater Western Sydney, having copped an elbow to the chin from Cameron in an incident that caused uproar across the AFL.

A Lions spokesperson confirmed Andrews has internal bleeding – although it’s not clear where – and said he was released on Sunday night and is now at home resting.

The club will provide a further update on his condition later on Monday.

Andrews, 21, needed four stitches to repair a cut on his chin from the collision but was said to be in good spirits once he returned to consciousness and even made an appearance on Brisbane’s bench before half-time.

He also approached Cameron after the full-time siren but took a turn for the worse later that night.

The key defender now seems at long odds to play in the Lions’ away clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

Cameron, meanwhile, is facing a lengthy suspension and is likely to be referred directly to the AFL tribunal when the match review panel hands down its findings from round 14.
