Lance Franklin, David Hale star as Hawks bury Demons

Lance Franklin provided the highlights and David Hale kicked six goals as Hawthorn belted Melbourne 1.17.12 (123) to 0.6.8 (44) in their AFL pre-season cup clash at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

The Hawks dominated from the start of their third-round match, scoring 6.2 before the Demons scored at all.

Worryingly for the Demons, the side they fielded was not any further off full strength than the Hawks.

Injured co-captain Jack Grimes, ex-skipper Brad Green, embattled forward Liam Jurrah and defender Joel Macdonald were the most notable Melbourne absentees.

But the Hawks were without stars Sam Mitchell, Shaun Burgoyne, Josh Gibson and Jarryd Roughead.

Franklin started the onslaught with a goal that will be hard to top all season.

He rolled through a shot from dead on the boundary line in the left forward pocket, after gathering a bouncing ball behind Melbourne’s James Frawley five minutes into the match.

Franklin added another moment to remember midway through the third quarter, taking a bounce and booting a nine-pointer on the run from inside the centre square.

By that stage the Hawks were 57 points clear.

Along with his super goal and four regulation majors, Franklin spent time roaming the midfield and played a role in setting up several other goals, including two to Hale in the first term.

While Franklin roamed, Hale proved an outstanding fill-in at full-forward.

He added another goal from a contested mark late in the second quarter, kicked two more in the third and opened the last term with an excellent strong pack mark and goal.

Matt Suckling (25 disposals) put his accurate left-foot kicking to good effect for the Hawks, while captain Luke Hodge (24 disposals) was constantly involved and Grant Birchall was good in defence.

There was little to like for the Demons, although ex-Brisbane recruit Mitch Clark provided a badly-needed forward target and kicked 3.3, while midfielder Nathan Jones battled hard.

Clark had few helpers in attack, Jack Watts having minimal impact despite his two goals, with the likely long-term absence of Jurrah, who is battling both criminal charges and a wrist injury, sure to hurt.

The Demons did not score for the first 21 minutes of the match, before Clark broke their drought, and managed just one behind in the third quarter, also to Clark.
