Goddard wants to be one-club AFL player

As talks over his contract intensify, St Kilda star Brendon Goddard made in clear on Tuesday he wants to be a one-club player.

The 27-year-old, who plays his 200th AFL game for the Saints against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday, is reportedly in discussions over a three-year deal from which he would earn around $600,000 a season.

“I’ll knock the nail on the head before anyone asks … we’ve been in constant talks with the footy club and they’re the discussions we’re having at the moment,” Goddard said.

“I think it’s pretty clear, my intentions.” He said there was “no doubt” he planned to stay on with St Kilda.

Goddard said that it was not unusual for contract talks to be lengthy.

“It’s a process you go through and clubs have obviously got their priorities with their signings,” he said.

“It’s well known that St Kilda have a lot of players out of contract currently and I think, just in terms of that, it takes a while to go through the process and the due diligence.”

Goddard denied any of the discussions throughout the club would affect the team as they battled to keep in touch with the top eight.

“I don’t think the circumstances that I’m in at the moment is affecting the footy team. Every player has to deal with it.

“I think I’m experienced enough and I’ve been around long enough to focus on what’s important and to separate the two.

“We’ve been in constant talks with the club all year.”

Goddard said he had never been tempted to switch clubs despite offers which might have come his way.

“I’ve said all along that I’m happy to be where I am and I’m honoured and privileged to play 200 games for the St Kilda footy club.

“I’ve been a happy 200-game player and I’m looking forward to the rest of my future.”

Greater Western Sydney is thought to be one club particularly interested in Goddard but there is virtually no chance he will consider any offer.

Goddard’s best season was in 2010 when the Saints made the grand final for the second straight year.

He averaged more than 28 possessions a game that season but considers he is since contributing in different ways.

“Obviously, I’m not having the impact on games that I’ve had in the past, or (had) really standout games,” he said.

“But I think I’ve contributed well in different areas that I haven’t in the past. I actually feel like I am making other players better,” he said.
