Eagles re-sign Andrew Gaff in new AFL deal

West Coast have re-signed exciting midfielder Andrew Gaff for a further two seasons, tying him to the AFL club until the end of 2014.

Gaff enjoyed a dream debut season last year, tallying 17 games and playing all three finals after being selected with pick No.4 in the 2010 national draft.

Rumours of homesickness had some pundits predicting the Victorian would seek a move back to Melbourne once his contract expired at the end of this year.

But the 19-year-old insists he’s settled well in Perth, and felt it was important to announce where his future lay early in the season.

“The last 12-18 months, since joining the club, have been great for me and I have enjoyed every minute of it,” Gaff said.

“I wanted to extend my contract and to get that done at this early stage of the season allows me to concentrate on playing good footy.

“We are confident we are building towards something special. I want to be a part of that.”

Meanwhile, West Coast midfielder Andrew Embley hopes he’s done enough to avoid the green vest in Saturday’s clash with Melbourne at Patersons Stadium.

Eagles coach John Worsfold sprang a minor surprise when he selected Embley as the club’s nominated sub for Sunday’s 49-point win over the Bulldogs.

Embley, whose pre-season campaign had been disrupted by a shoulder injury, admitted it had been hard to watch on from the pine for three quarters.

But the 30-year-old made the most of his opportunities in the final term, finishing the match with 12 possessions and a goal after his late introduction.

Embley is unsure whether his busy final quarter was enough to prove he’s ready for a full game this week.

But the premiership midfielder said he’s willing to play any role for the side.

“I missed most of the NAB Cup. We had a lot of players that were in good form and missed out playing in round one, so it was good just to be out there,” Embley said.

“I feel like I’m going not too bad at the moment.

“With a shoulder injury, I was able to do a lot of the running (pre-season).

“I feel like I’m pretty fit, but it’s just getting a bit of match fitness into me that will hopefully happen over the next two or three weeks.

“It was difficult (being the sub). I was itching to get on and play.”

Melbourne coach Mark Neeld was left fuming after his side’s 41-point loss to Brisbane in their season-opener.

Embley said the Eagles would treat the Demons with caution.
