West Coast defender Eric Mackenzie got the towelling of his life when he last faced star Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt.
But Mackenzie insists he won’t be haunted by the past when the pair lock horns at Patersons Stadium on Monday night.
Riewoldt was unstoppable in Richmond’s 49-point win over West Coast in 2010, with the in-form spearhead booting 10 goals for the match in the absence of premier Eagles defender Darren Glass.
The first four of Riewoldt’s goals came against Mackenzie in a devastating 11-minute burst, before Will Schofield was handed the daunting task.
Mackenzie has come on in leaps and bounds since that encounter, but has missed the past two games against Richmond due to injury.
The 25-year-old is adamant he hasn’t been gunning for revenge against Riewoldt, claiming the beating he copped wasn’t playing on his mind.
“I learned to just put them in the past really,” Mackenzie said.
“Once the game is done, you do the review on Monday and then it’s on to the next week.
“So you can’t really stew on the previous performances, whether they are good or bad.
“There’s no point in going back three years. Game styles have changed; teams have changed.”
Mackenzie said he was looking forward to his duel with Riewoldt, who sits third in the Coleman Medal race with 29 goals this season.
“I enjoy the one-on-one battles. You don’t often get them these days,” Mackenzie said.
“His forward pressure is pretty good. He’s a great mark, good on the lead – everyone has got their different strengths.”
West Coast have won four games on the trot to surge into sixth spot, while Richmond sit in 10th spot despite boasting the same 5-4 record as the Eagles.
Eagles vice-captain Beau Waters (quad) and veteran Adam Selwood (quad) are a chance to return against the Tigers, but Schofield is set to miss at least another week with a dislocated finger.
