Daw could play in NAB Cup

North Melbourne ruckman Majak Daw could make a surprise appearance in the NAB Cup starting on Friday.

Daw was suspended indefinitely after a night out when he should have been in rehabilitation for a knee injury – then lying to coach Brad Scott.

The Sudanese rookie, who is yet to play a senior game, has been relegated to North’s VFL affiliate Werribee.

However midfielder Leigh Adams said it was possible Daw, who he described as “a rockstar”, could play in the pre-season competition.

“He’s just got to make sure he gets his knee right so he’s ready to go at some stage maybe in this NAB Cup or whenever he gets his chance,” Adams said.

“In terms of his knee he’ll be ready at some stage during the NAB Cup but I’ve got no idea whether he’ll be back at the club then.”

Adams said Daw’s teammates did not harbour any resentment towards him, although they did feel let down.

“Obviously it was disappointing but Majak’s come a lot way in his development from when he first got to the club,” Adams said.

“He was at the team photo the other day and he’s in there doing his rehab in the mornings.

“Although it’s disappointing the boys still back him 100 per cent and hope he’ll be back at the club pretty soon.

“It’s sort of water under the bridge. None of the boys have got any ill-feelings towards him or anything like that.”

He said Daw needed to put the incident behind him and concentrate on regaining his fitness.

Adams said the players were also fully prepared for the extensive publicity Daw generated, despite never playing a senior game.

“There’s always going to be huge media wherever Majak goes,” he said.

“He’s the first Sudanese player to get on an AFL list and I think he’s handled that really well over the first couple of years of his career.

“It was a pretty big story but I think wherever Maj goes he’s got that sort of rockstar aura about him and he’s going to get the media attention.”
