Dad helps Sydney’s Parker prove fitness

Luke Parker is likely to play in Sydney’s AFL clash with Fremantle on Saturday, two weeks after breaking his jaw in a clash with Greater Western Sydney veteran James McDonald.

Parker, Ryan O’Keefe (knee) and Rhyce Shaw (back) will all feature in the Swans’ final training session on Thursday, but the young gun has already undergone a fairly exacting test on his fractured jaw.

“How they go during training we’ll have to wait and see. But probably out of that trio we expect Parker to play,” Swans coach John Longmire said prior to the closed SCG session.

“He essentially did a fitness test with his dad last week. He went home for the weekend and his dad planted one on his chin and gave him the all clear.

“…His dad asked him how he was going and he said ‘pretty well’. And so I think his dad just wanted to make sure he was OK.

“It’s probably no wonder that Luke goes after the ball the way he does.”

Longmire confirmed if the hard-nosed 19-year-old made it through his side’s final hit-out, he would almost certainly be selected.

“It’s interesting. Nathan Gibbs our doctor always said that while it was a fracture, it was only a very small one. So it was all dependant on pain.

“He’s been able to run and run really well, so his test today is all the competitive work.

“We obviously won’t take any risks, so if he trains today and feels terrific then the doctor will make the decision.”

The chances of O’Keefe and Shaw returning are less clear, although both trained strongly earlier in the week.

“They’ll be the ones who decide it,” Longmire said.

“Those older experienced players know themselves pretty well.

“When you sit down and have a chat with them and talk about the pros and cons of playing and not playing, they’re usually the ones that make the decisions and most of the times they’re pretty right.”

O’Keefe has been sidelined with bone bruising since a training mishap in late February, while Shaw injured his back in the side’s final pre-season clash.

Longmire said Sydney’s selection panel are still mulling over whether to recall Mark Seaby in an effort to help Shane Mumford combat the ruck dominance of Docker Aaron Sandilands.
