The Lions step out in search of their first win at the Gabba on Saturday against unbeaten Geelong.

After pummelling North a fortnight ago, Brisbane improved drastically last week to upset Melbourne at the MCG, a game that largely boiled down to the Lions’ dominance around the clearance.

As they’ve done multiple times during the Chris Fagan era, Brisbane annihilated the Dees around the centre, which in turn helped set up a big night for the likes of Eric Hipwood and Joe Daniher in front of goal.

The Cats rank sixth in terms of clearances this year, but they might have the edge defensively with Tom Stewart and the rest of the back line firing on all cylinders.

There hasn’t been a better side in the competition when it comes to intercept marks this year, making this a huge challenge for a Lions forward line that has struggled to make the most of its opportunities at times.

Overall, the battle in the middle of the ground will likely prove the determining factor.

The Cats have leaned heavily on top disposal-getter Patrick Dangerfield so far, while the likes of Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage have been hit and miss at times for Brisbane.

Backing Brisbane to remain winless at the Gabbatoir is a tough sell, but the fact the Cats are two-goal outsiders feels a little disrespectful in my book.
