As has been the case for many years, the footy gods have delivered a mouth-watering Easter Thursday matchup with winless Brisbane and Collingwood meeting in front of a packed house at the Gabba.

The Lions bring fresh legs to their home ground off last week’s bye, while the pressure is firmly on Collingwood to respond to a shock 15-point loss to St Kilda last week.

Lions coach Chris Fagan has come under fire for his sides’ lack of toughness and inability to adjust mid-game. Brisbane blew a five-goal lead a fortnight ago to Fremantle, another disappointing result for a club that arguably holds one of the most talented lists in the competition.

The Pies, meanwhile, remain a mess down back. Collingwood coughed up 55 forward half entries to St Kilda last Thursday night, a display that left many wondering whether the same effort level that resulted in a Premiership last year has since gone by the wayside.

Worse, the Pies had no answer for the Saints’ stifling defensive structure – struggling to move the ball forward and convert during the first half of play.

Looking ahead, this game basically boils down to which team you believe can solve their problems the fastest.

Craig McRae has to be stressing the importance of the %1ers, while much of Brisbane’s woes revolve around their defensive structure and how they adjust to momentum and pressure.

Either way, we can expect a hard-nosed game of footy like the Grand Final, and while part of me wants to stay out of it and back the Under, I think the Pies respond with their backs to the wall.

At this time of year, I’m just not sure a bye is what Brisbane truly needed, and with the Pies showing some fight late against the Saints last week, I think there’s plenty for them to build on.
