Teenager Daniil Kvyat was named on Monday as Toro Rosso’s replacement for Red Bull-bound Australian Daniel Ricciardo for next season’s Formula One campaign.
The 19-year-old Russian, with experience in GP3 and the European Championship Formula 3 series, will partner Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne at the sister stable of the all-conquering Red Bull team.
“This is wonderful news, a dream has become reality and I thank both Red Bull and Toro Rosso for giving me this opportunity,” said the Rome-based Kvyat.
Red Bull appointed Ricciardo in September as their second driver for next season – as understudy to three-time world champion German Sebastian Vettel – with fellow Australian Mark Webber quitting Formula One at the end of the season.
Toro Rosso have 31 points this season in the constructors’ championship to sit eighth ahead of this weekend’s Indian Grand Prix.
