Following a strong win on Randwick’s Kensington track that topped his debut second, lightly raced colt Under Focus could head to the Kindergarten Stakes.
Yulong secured the colt for $300,000 during the Easter yearling sale; he’s by Too Darn Hot from an unraced full sister to Group placegetter Condor, and trainer Kris Lees is eager to gauge his ability against tougher rivals based on the pedigree.
Kris Lees mentioned the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on April 4 as a likely next outing, contingent on how the youngster bounces back from his 2026 Keeneland Breeders’ Cup Handicap (1100m) triumph on Wednesday.
“I’d say we’d have to look at it. It’s a week-and-a-half away,” Lees said.
“We’ll see how he pulls up and speak to the Yulong team, but they’ve got a really nice horse going forward.”
Under Focus endured a challenging start, held wide in the three and four paths before Tyler Schiller advanced him to sit outside the leader.
The colt ranged alongside in the home straight, hit the front decisively, and fended off Drumfire by 1-1/2 lengths with Peyton third, another two lengths behind.
“He had to do a little bit of work early, so I thought there was some merit to the win,” Lees said.
“Pre-race it looked a nice race with a bit of trial form and some exposed racehorses. He’s done it both ends so it was a good effort.”
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Reachin’ Out dominated the two-year-old fillies’ race, leading throughout and pulling clear by four lengths over Lees’ She’s Extra.
Debutant filly’s rider Regan Bayliss praised the display highly.
“Whatever she was going to do today she was going to improve on in leaps and bounds, so that’s why it was such an impressive win,” Bayliss said.
“She really let go today and never let anything get near her.”
Waterhouse and Bott were not present to reveal plans, though Reachin’ Out is entered in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 11.
