Proteas produce fighting spirit again

Australia have thrown everything at South Africa during the current Test series.

Even the kitchen sink has probably been given a good workout.

But as it stands, the series is locked at 0-0, with the third and deciding Test at the WACA Ground precariously balanced after a topsy-turvy opening day.

South Africa looked gone during the second Test in Adelaide before an unbeaten century from Faf du Plessis saw the Proteas bat out the final day to secure a draw.

In Perth, the Proteas were being put to the sword at 6-75 before du Plessis again came to the rescue with a defiant and unbeaten 78 as the Proteas posted 225.

Spinner Robin Peterson, who posted a handy 31 himself, praised the fighting qualities of the side, which reduced Australia to 2-33 by stumps.

“We’ve had a long time on the road now so we’ve had some time to bond together and really form a tightly-knit unit,” Peterson said.

“When the pressure’s on, the fighting qualities of the team comes out on the field.

“That’s what we pride ourselves on. It’s part of something that we’re used to doing in Test match cricket.

“We showed today we can do the same when we’re under pressure.

“A little bit’s going to be required with the ball now. Hopefully the bowlers wake up refreshed and we can have a full go at Australia.”
