South Australia’s Gary Putland continued to mesmerise Victoria’s batsmen with another fine display as the left-armer claimed 4-44 in Wednesday’s one-day cup clash at the MCG.
Victoria recovered from a shaky start to score 8-241 from their 50 overs in a total they may struggle to defend on a pitch which didn’t appear to offer much assistance to the quicks.
Putland picked up where he’d left off after taking 12-92 in the Sheffield Shield game which South Australia won at the MCG on Monday.
The Bushrangers slumped to 5-134 before 21-year-old Peter Handscomb (65) and 20-year-old Alex Keath (28) added 74 for the sixth wicket on Wednesday.
Handscomb showed a fine temperament in a difficult situation, hitting two fours and two sixes from 72 deliveries and posting his maiden half-century.
Dumped Test batsman Rob Quiney in contrast had looked a little down on confidence and was soon out caught behind off the bowling of Kane Richardson for 14 at 1-31.
Wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman dropped a simple catch when Glenn Maxwell was on one and the limited-overs international went on to add 51 for the second wicket with Aaron Finch.
However the aggressive Maxwell failed to make the most of his good fortune and skied a catch to deep mid-wicket on 20 at 2-82.
The Redbacks struck again next over as David Hussey (one) was stumped off a leg-side wide from spinner Johan Botha (2-42).
Botha picked up a second key wicket when Finch was caught behind for 46 at 4-98. Finch and Hussey had scored centuries in Victoria’s previous game against NSW on November 18.
South Australia were right on top when Victoria skipper Cameron White (26) chipped a catch to mid-on from Putland’s bowling at 5-134.
But the Bushrangers fought back with a 74-run stand for the sixth wicket between Keath and Handscomb who fell victim to Putland in the 43rd and 47th overs respectively.
Putland’s 4-44 off 12 overs also included the dismissal of Will Sheridan who was bowled for three.
Jayde Herrick scored a valuable 13 not out.
