Minichiello signs new deal with Roosters

Veteran Sydney Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello has ended months of speculation about his NRL future by agreeing to a one-year contract extension.

The former Golden Boot recipient and premiership winner is excited at the prospect of finishing his career at the one club.

The Roosters’ all-time leading try-scorer, Minichiello will play his 236th premiership game on Sunday against Newcastle, trailing only Luke Ricketson for most games at the club.

Minichiello, 31, joined the Roosters in 1997 and will play his 14th season in first grade with the club next year.

“It’s a great privilege to be a one club player especially at a foundation club like the Roosters,” Minichiello said.

“I’m very excited about this new deal. The club has been very loyal to me and it’s great that it’s sorted and we can move forward.”

The resilient No.1 cited Manly great Steve Menzies as an example of longevity in the game and said he wants to keep playing for as long as his body feels fine.

Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis said Minichiello would play an important role mentoring the club’s young talent.

“Anthony is a very proud clubman and we are delighted to repay his loyalty to the Roosters with this extension to his contract,” he said.

“Mini has etched his place not only in the history books of our proud club but the game of rugby league and is a great ambassador both on and off the field.

“His great work ethic means that he continues to rank as one of the game’s leading fullbacks and his experience will continue to benefit the young and talented squad around him.”
