Sheedy hatches AFL plan for Goodes

Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy says finding a match-up for Sydney champion Adam Goodes is a difficult task and he might look to “triple hit” the Swans captain in Saturday’s historic AFL clash at ANZ Stadium.

The first game of the new season also marks the Giants’ debut in the competition.

Goodes’ combination of height and mobility makes him a difficult opponent for any club.

“It’s a very difficult question to be honest, he’s such a brilliant player,” Sheedy said on Tuesday.

“We mighty have to play a different person on him than most people would think we would.

“His first four or five yards, he gets away from players now.

“I would have thought he would have been retired.

“Most people retire at his age. I can’t believe he’s still playing, it’s so wrong.

“We might have to triple hit him from the bench, just keep a guy running onto him, running into him.”

Veteran coach Sheedy still had his tongue firmly placed in his cheek when he suggested the Giants’ high profile rugby league convert Israel Folau might even spend time on Goodes.

Sheedy also took the opportunity to make another humorous reference towards the two dismissed charges against Folau arising from last weekend’s practice match against Richmond.

“We are going to put the Raging Bull – Izzy Folau right onto him (Goodes),” Sheedy said.

“Grab him, tackle him, throw him into the ground, get reported again – wow.

“Just letting you know we’re going to let him out – bang – first quarter.”

Sheedy and his Sydney counterpart John Longmire agreed the AFL made the right call on dismissing the two rough conduct charges against Folau on Monday, freeing him to make his debut against the Swans.

“It was a commonsense decision by the AFL,” Sheedy said.

Asked by Sheedy what he thought on the topic, Longmire said: “I think the result delivered last night was the right result, Kevin.”

Longmire said he was expecting the unexpected from the Giants, while Sheedy said GWS needed to give Sydney “what they don’t really know and don’t necessarily want.”
