Port down Carlton in AFL cup match

Port Adelaide’s old and new combined to sink Carlton by six points in Sunday’s AFL pre-season cup match in Adelaide.

Power veteran Kane Cornes and teen draftee Chad Wingard booted goals in the last 90 seconds to give Port a round one victory at AAMI Stadium.

Port prevailed 0.6.10 (46) to Carlton’s 1.5.1 (40) in the first of the triple header cup fixtures.

The 29-year-old Cornes booted two goals, including a remarkable set shot from the boundary line which gave his side the lead in the dying stages.

Wingard, an 18-year-old draftee on debut for Port, then nailed another major before a late Bryce Gibbs goal reduced the final margin.

Cornes gathered 12 disposals and ex-West Coast Eagle Brad Eagle collected nine in influential displays, while the Blues were best served by Heath Scotland (12 touches) and Andrew Collins (two goals).

Port streaked to an early 17 point lead before Carlton scored – and the Blues’ initial two goals were controversial.

Blues utility Collins soccered through the goals to open his side’s scoring but Ebert protested he got a hand on the ball.

Umpires inexplicably declined to use video technology to review the goal, with replays showing Ebert got a touch before the entirety of the ball crossed the line.

Carlton’s next score was also remarkable as ruckman Matthew Kreuzer marked 120 metres from goal when the half-time siren sounded.

But Kreuzer was awarded a 50m penalty, which escaped the attention of almost all Power players.

The Blues ruckman strode unattended through the middle of the ground and launched a 60m shot which bounced through for a nine-point super goal.
