South Australia claimed their first domestic one-day cricket title in a quarter-century with a dramatic tie against Tasmania in the decider at Adelaide Oval.
Both sides made 285 runs but the Redbacks won the trophy as they finished top of the table in the preliminary rounds.
Tasmania needed two runs from the final ball to triumph, but allrounder James Faulkner missed a fullish ball from SA speedster Gary Putland.
Faulkner and non-striker Ricky Ponting, who threw away his pads to ensure he ran quicker for the final ball, completed one bye.
The run left Tasmania 4-285 after SA were earlier bowled out for 285 in their final over.
The Tigers appeared set for a third one-day title in five seasons when captain George Bailey (101 from 105 balls) and Ponting (75 not out from 78 balls) united.
The experienced pair coolly combined in a 174-run fourth-wicket partnership to take Tasmania to the brink of victory.
The Tigers needed five runs from Putland’s final over, but the SA paceman was nerveless.
He dismissed Bailey with his second ball before 10,245 spectators, who were admitted free.
Faulkner then was unable to cash in and the Redbacks celebrated their first one-day crown in 25 years.
It seemed SA had literally let slip their chances of ending their drought when they turfed three catches and blew two gilt-edged run out chances.
All five chances were afforded to Bailey and Ponting, who came together after SA spinner Nathan Lyon claimed three wickets in five overs to leave the Tigers wobbling at 3-108 in the 23rd over.
Bailey was dropped on six by Tom Cooper and later survived two run out chances in consecutive overs when SA fielders missed direct hit attempts with Bailey having given up making his ground.
Ponting was given reprieves on 36, when Putland turfed a chance in the deep from Lyon’s bowling, and again on 58 when Cooper dropped another outfield catch – again from Lyon.
Earlier, Redbacks captain Michael Klinger (81) and Daniel Harris blasted a 133 run opening partnership within 25 overs to lay the platform for SA’s challenging total.
A cameo from Theo Doropoulos, who smashed four sixes in making 40 from 34 balls, helped SA to a late flurry while Tigers allrounder James Faulkner claimed 4-75 from 12 overs and paceman Jackson Bird took three wickets.
