Ashleigh Barty sung the praises of teenage Ukrainian prodigy Marta Kostyuk after beating her in their Fed Cup clash on Sunday.
Australia’s No.1 singles player defeated Kostyuk 6-2 6-3 to put Australia one win away from clinching the World Group II tie in Canberra.
The World No.26 said she could relate to Kostyuk, 15, having herself been touted as one of tennis’ brightest rising stars from an early age.
“She’s (Kostyuk) handling it (the pressure) a hell of a lot better than I did,” said Barty, who won the 2011 junior Wimbledon title at age 15.
“She’s been thrown into the spotlight and I think her game is phenomenal.
“She’s a hell of a player and will be a force to be reckoned with.”
Barty showed some nerves in her first home Fed Cup singles rubber on Saturday against Lyudmyla Kichenok, before winning 4-6 6-1 6-4 in the first career clash between the pair.
There were no such problems against Kustyok, breaking the world No.185 in the opening game of the match and powered through the clash.
Kustyok, who defeated Daria Gavrilova on Saturday in her Fed Cup debut, took an extended break after the first set.
Ukraine’s captain Mikhail Filima was seen leading Kustyok off court, with the teenager upset about how she was playing.
“After the first set he (Filima) told me I’m playing better, I’m just kind of in a rush, so to slow down,” Kustyok said.
“She (Barty) was playing very good today and I think it was one of the best matches she could show…I couldn’t do a lot of things right today.”
Kustyok has been dubbed the next Martina Hingis after being the youngest player to reach the third round of an Australian Open since the five-time grand slam winner in 1996.
