Daria Gavrilova has an opportunity to redeem herself from a “shocker” on day one and close out the Fed Cup tie for Australia on Sunday.
In a late surprise switch, Ukraine subbed in unranked Nadiia Kichenok to play the world No.26 in the reverse singles rubber, in place of her twin sister Lyudmyla.
Ashleigh Barty defeated Lyudmyla in three sets in the first singles rubber on Saturday.
Australia went 2-1 up in the World Group II tie on Sunday thanks to Barty’s straight-sets victory over Marta Kostyuk.
World No.16 Barty was wary of the precocious 15-year-old, after a breakout summer and her defeat of Gavrilova on Saturday to level the tie at 1-1.
But the Queenslander broke Kustyok’s serve in the opening game of the match and was barely challenged in the 6-2 6-3 win.
If required, Barty will back up in the doubles with Casey Dellacqua against Ukraine’s pairing of Nadiia Kichenok and 14-year-old Dasha Lopatetskaya.
