Top-seed Bertens to open Hobart campaign

Tennis world No.22 Kiki Bertens contests the Hobart International looking for singles match practice before her Australian Open campaign.

The 25-year-old from the Netherlands on Monday plays Germany’s Annika Beck, sitting 29 places lower in ranking.

Bertens comes from Auckland where she was a round-one loser in the ASB Classic but won the tournament’s doubles partnering Johanna Larsson.

Bertens is the No.1 seed in Hobart where a number of late withdrawals have opened the draw to more ‘lucky losers’ giving the big names a greater chance of success.

Larsson has also made the trip to Hobart and faces Kristyna Pliskova on Monday.

Wildcard entry and 2010 French Open winner Francesca Schiavone takes on Croatian contender Jana Fett to decide who will play Queenslander teenager Lizette Cabrera who caused a major upset by beating world No.40 Misaki Doi on day one.

Also flying the flag for Australia on day two will be wildcard entrant Jaimee Fourlis, up against former world No.13 Belgian Kirsten Flipkins.
