Muguruza shocked by Vandeweghe blow-out

Beaten quarter-finalist Garbine Muguruza says she was powerless to resist the force of Cyclone Coco Vandeweghe at the Australian Open.

The seventh-seeded Spaniard became the latest big name to fall to the insurgent American on Tuesday.

World No.1 Angelique Kerber, 15th seed Roberta Vinci and former world No.5 Eugenie Bouchard had already succumbed to the power-hitter on her way to the quarter-finals, where Muguruza lasted just 84 minutes.

“I was surprised. I think she played unbelievable,” Muguruza said.

“Her serve. Her shots were there. She barely missed.

“Three times we played in the past, she didn’t show this level.”

Vandeweghe hit 31 winners to Muguruza’s 14, didn’t miss a net point or drop serve all match.

Defeated but not deflated, the 23-year-old held her hands up to the display.

“I have zero regrets about my performance,” she said.

“When you play with someone that has the power to disturb like this, to hit these kind of shots, and has a good day, I mean, it’s difficult.

“When you have an opponent that is playing like this, sees the ball super big, finds the court everywhere, there’s really nothing you can do.”

Muguruza said she would take heart from her best result at Melbourne Park on the road to defending her French Open title in May.

“I felt my body wasn’t 100 per cent and I didn’t know how far I was going to go here,” she said.

“I went pretty far.

“I felt I did everything I could on the court, so I’m happy with that.”
