Preview:

Roberto Bautista Agut has looked very sharp in the early rounds at the 2014 Australian Open, and if you were watching him play you could easily have forgotten the fact that he’s never been beyond the second round of any of the slams that he’s entered. The Spaniard has been running his opponents off the court here, and finding the lines with unnerving accuracy from the behind the baseline.

Although Bautista Agut demolished Tim Smyczek 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, few people took much notice of the result. His 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Juan Martin Del Potro, however, caught a lot of people off guard. He then shot down any concerns that he might be a one-match wonder by thrashing No. 27 seed Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.

Dimitrov is the next player standing in the World No. 62’s way. The Bulgarian climbed the rankings last year and marked himself out as a potential top five talent by beating Novak Djokovic in an exhilarating contest at the Madrid Masters. Many are expecting Dimitrov to come of age in the next few years and he’s already making good progress. This will be his first appearance in the fourth round of a slam.

Dimitrov’s performances in Melbourne so far have been solid. He hasn’t been able to record any one-sided victories, but what he has managed to do is raise his game when faced with a challenge. He beat Bradley Klahn 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in round one, before defeating Yen-Hsun Lu 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(11). In round three he was able to clinch a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(10) success in an eagerly awaited showdown with Milos Raonic.

Monday’s clash will be the fourth to take place between Bautista Agut and Dimitrov. The rankings will have you believe that Dimitrov is the favourite, though Bautista Agut currently leads the head to head 2-1. When these competitors last faced off, at the China Open last season, Bautista Agut left the court as the victor with a 6-4, 6-2 scoreline.
