Universidad de Chile hammers Godoy Cruz

A Junior Fernandes hat trick led Universidad de Chile to a 5-1 home victory over Argentina’s Godoy Cruz in a Group 8 match in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday.

Velez Sarsfield of Argentina defeated Guadalajara 3-0 to keep a perfect record in Group 7.

Fernandes scored in the 29th and first-half injury time, and added his third in the 72nd minute. Gustavo Lorenzetti picked another for the Chileans in the 34th and Angelo Enriquez scored in second-half stoppage time.

Leonardo Signali scored in the 53rd for Godoy Cruz.

Universidad de Chile and Godoy Cruz both have three points from two matches. Colombia’s Atletico Nacional leads the group with six.

Fernandes gave Universidad a 1-0 lead when he took a through ball on the counterattack, stepped around the keeper and slotted the ball home. He followed the goal with a series of backflips to celebrate.

Lorenzetti made it 2-0, scoring after a corner was headed-on as he waited near the far post.

Fernandes, born to Brazilian parents, netted his second in first-half stoppage time, heading home from 10 meters (yards). He scored his other in the 72nd.

In Group 7 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mauro Obolo broke through for Velez Sarsfield in the 67th, and Federico Insua added two late goals. The Argentine club tops the group with six points in two matches. Chivas has one point in two games.

In Thursday matches, The Strongest of Bolivia hosts Juan Aurich of Peru in Group 1, Olimpia of Paraguay is at home against Argentina’s Lanus in Group 2, and Universidad Catolica of Chile is at home against Junior of Colombia in Group 3.
