Phillips poised to defend bowling crown

Victorian teenager Lisa Phillips will be aiming to become the first bowler to win back-to-back Australian Open singles titles when she contests the final in Melbourne on Friday.

The 18-year-old prodigy faces a daunting opponent in the decider when she will line up at Darebin International Sports Centre against national captain Lynsey Armitage, who is chasing a rare treble at the tournament.

Armitage claimed the triples trophy last year and the pairs crown in 2009, and hopes to make it a memorable day for her Queensland club Helensvale.

Club team-mates Mark Casey and Nathan Rice will fight out the men’s final after both survived semi-final tie-breakers on Thursday.

“It’s going to be a huge match,” said a relieved Rice.

“Mark is playing really well at the moment and I’m quite happy with my form.

“It’s going to be big for our club, but I’m just pleased to get here myself.”
