Newcastle and Sunderland fined by FA

Tyneside derby rivals Newcastle and Sunderland have been fined a combined 60,000 pounds ($A90,800) for failing to control their players during an ill-tempered 1-1 draw in the English Premier League.

Both northeast clubs accepted misconduct charges by the Football Association over a flare-up that followed Sunderland winger James McClean’s late challenge on Newcastle’s Danny Simpson in the first half of the match on March 4.

Newcastle was fined 40,000 pounds at a hearing on Wednesday. Sunderland was fined 20,000 pounds.

Sunderland had Stephane Sessegnon sent off during the match for elbowing Demba Ba before teammate Lee Cattermole was red-carded after the final whistle for a foul and abusive language.
