Try-scoring Boks happy to win ugly

The Springboks are the leading try-scorers at the mid-stage of this year’s Rugby Championship, but coach Heyneke Meyer will take whatever type of win his players can pull off against the All Blacks in Auckland.

“I’m really happy that we score tries, but on Saturday I’ll take a one-point win as well,” he said.

“I’ll take the ugliest win in the history of the game as long as we can win.”

South Africa’s four touchdowns in their 38-12 defeat of Australian in Brisbane last week took their haul from their three matches so far to 14.

The greater expansiveness in their play hasn’t escaped the notice of the All Blacks, whose own try tally stands at 11.

Meyer said the sides he coached had traditionally been criticised by the South African public for being boring.

So he was flattered to hear the All Blacks talk about the extra attacking edge shown by the present Springboks.

He described his squad, skippered by second five-eighth Jean de Villiers, as well-balanced.

He said he was proud of the exciting set of backs he’s got, but the forwards had to lay the platform.

“It starts up front,” he said.

“We have to win quality ball and put the opposition under pressure.”

Like South Africa, defending champions New Zealand are also unbeaten, but the Springboks top the table with two bonus points to the All Blacks’ one.

Meyer will have an unchanged 23-man line-up at Eden Park.

He said the Springboks were fortunate that at all 28 players in their tour party were fit for selection, but it made sense to stick with the same match-day squad after their performance against the Wallabies.

However, he added that they would have to lift a gear against the All Blacks.

“You don’t want to get into the situation where it’s easy to pick the same side and everything goes well and you’ve won,” he said.

“We know we have to make an unbelievable step up. This is the best team in the world we’re facing.”

New Zealand will name their side on Thursday morning.

South Africa: Zane Kirchner, Willie le Roux, JJ Engelbrecht, Jean de Villiers (captain), Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Duane Vermeulen, Willem Alberts, Francois Louw, Flip van der Merwe, Eben Etzebeth, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira.

Reserves: Adriaan Strauss, Gurthro Steenkamp, Coenie Oosthuizen, Juandre Kruger, Siya Kolisi, Jano Vermaak, Pat Lambie, Jan Serfontein.
