Tomane on track for Super Brumbies return

Wallabies flyer Joe Tomane says he needs to test out his ankle in full training before he can be cleared to return for the Brumbies’ Super Rugby finals assault.

One of the Brumbies’ main attacking weapons, Tomane damaged his ankle at a training session leading into Australia’s first Test against Wales in June, less than 48 hours after making a promising debut against Scotland.

The Brumbies only need a point from Saturday’s last-round clash with the Blues in Canberra to be assured of a playoff berth and Tomane’s imminent return is timely.

“Physically I feel fine but I haven’t done much to test the ankle. I haven’t done any serious training yet so I’ve got to put my ankle through that kind of stress before I can see if I’m ready to play Super 15,” the NRL convert said on Monday.

“It’s coming along really well and it’s probably healing a little bit faster than expected but these injuries are pretty tricky.

“Whether it’s this week or next week, or whether it’s for the Brumbies or the Owls (Brumbies’ feeder team), I’m not sure. I’ve got to get through a full week of training and see what the coaches want to do with me.”

Tomane is a powerful ball-runner who scored 20 tries in just 32 NRL games during his stints with Melbourne and Gold Coast.

For the Brumbies this year he’s crossed the stripe on four occasions.

Tomane said he’s not expecting to march straight back into the team at outside centre or on the wing.

“Who knows, I may not even play in that finals series, it depends on how the ankle goes and I don’t think the coaches want to change too much if the team’s going well,” he said.

Meanwhile in injury news for the NSW Waratahs, Sekope Kepu (calf) and Wycliff Palu (shoulder) will be assessed during the week – although Palu was cleared of a fracture.
