Real’s Jovic faces jail over COVID breach

Serbian prosecutors have filed charges against Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic for allegedly violating self-isolation during the coronavirus state of emergency in March.

Meanwhile, on another day when reported COVID-19 protocol breaches by top sports people have come to the fore, England’s rugby Test against the Barbarians is in doubt while the NFL is investigating the Los Angeles Raiders.

It was reported in Serbia that prosecutors are asking for a six-month prison sentence for Jovic because he failed to comply with health protocols after his return from Spain, state news agency Tanjug reported.

Under Serbian law, the court now needs to confirm the indictment submitted by the prosecution.

Jovic had the opportunity to pay a 3.5-million dinars ($A49,213) fine which would have scuppered further charges, state broadcaster RTS reported.

The Confederation of African Football postponed one of its Champions League semi-finals because players and officials of Moroccan club Raja Casablanca have been put in quarantine after a coronavirus outbreak in the squad that resulted in eight positive tests before Saturday’s second leg clash with Zamalek in Egypt.

England’s match at Twickenham on Sunday could be cancelled after some Baa-Baas players were reported to have breached coronavirus protocols by leaving their team hotel without permission.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) says an unknown number of players left the hotel without gaining permission and did not inform organisers of their whereabouts on Wednesday evening.

After their return, they were separated from the rest of the group in the biosecure bubble.

The NFL has shifted the Las Vegas game against Tampa Bay out of prime time Sunday after several Raiders players were unable to practice this week because of contact tracing for coronavirus.

The league says the changes were made out of an “abundance of caution” to make sure a game would be available for Sunday night.

The Raiders placed one starting right tackle Trent Brown on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday after he tested positive for the coronavirus while they sent home four other starters as officials determine how much contact those players had with Brown.

A fifth player has also has been unable to practice because of contact tracing.

According to a report, multiple uses of the reserve/COVID-19 list is subject to investigation by the NFL.

The NHL cancelled the Winter Classic in Minnesota scheduled for January 1 and All-Star Weekend that was set for late January in Florida.

It said those moves don’t change the league and players’ target date to begin on or around the start of the year in the hopes of each team playing a full 82-game season.
