Time is against halfback Will Genia in his bid to play for the Wallabies in next month’s Test series against England.

Genia hasn’t played for his French club Stade Francais since January as he continues to recuperate from surgery on the knee he reinjured during Australia’s World Cup campaign.

But the 66-cap veteran is still holding out hope of earning selection in coach Michael Cheika’s Australian squad for the three Tests against touring England beginning on June 11, feeling that he still has much to offer.

“I’ve had ongoing discussions with Cheik, but it all depends on how the rehab goes,” Genia told Fox Sports from Paris.

“I go for my first run this week and if everything goes well and we can progress to the point that where I feel I’ve done enough work as far as conditioning and speed to be ready to play Test footy, I’d love to.

“Whether or not I’d be ready based on my training time and not having played yet, that’s a call for the coaches to make.

“But I’ve said to Michael on the occasions that we’ve spoken that if I’m fit, I’d love to play.”

Genia’s severe lack of match fitness probably leaves Nick Phipps favourite to reclaim the starting halfback role, while the Queensland Reds’ Nick Frisby and Melbourne Rebels skipper Nic Stirzaker could be in the frame for Test debuts off the bench.

Whether he plays against England or not, Genia believes surgery on his knee and the lay-off could lengthen his career.

“Hopefully it’s not going to give me any problems in the future,” he added.

“I think it’s really helped in extending my career, but also just making sure that I can play the best that I possibly can without problems.

“But I miss it, I really miss playing.

“I’m working hard so that I can give myself an opportunity to play any rugby anytime soon because I miss the fun and enjoyment that the game brings.”
