Wallabies playmaker Quade Cooper is in serious doubt for the Spring Tour clash with France, with the enigmatic star facing a fitness test on game day.

The 28-year-old suffered an ankle injury at training on Tuesday and sat out the captain’s run on Friday.

Coach Michael Cheika remains hopeful Cooper will take the field at Stade de France for Saturday’s kick-off (7am on Sunday AEDT).

“We don’t do a lot today so he just wanted to get a bit of a run-out and we wanted to get the swelling down a little bit but he’ll be fine,” Cheika said on Friday.

Cooper has fallen behind Bernard Foley in the pecking order for the No.10 jersey, but was set to reunite with former Reds halves partner Will Genia against Les Bleus.

Cheika was unapologetic about picking Cooper on Thursday, despite the injury concern and noted after a long year no player was injury-free.

“That’s the selection we made. Players are playing not in shape, we’re playing Test match number (13) this year,” Cheika said.

“No one’s in shape. Everyone’s playing with some injury. It’s about toughing it out and going out there and doing it.”

Foley has endured a busy 12 months, and as with five others who have played all 12 Tests this year he was left out of the starting line-up named on Thursday.

“There’s Foley, for example. He played the World Cup, went to Japan, played Super Rugby and now he’s here,” Cheika said.

“You have to play injured. Players can get themselves through.

“We’ve got good medical staff and we make decisions when players train and when they don’t train based on what’s going to be the best for them.

“We don’t do very much on a Friday – it’s more about putting your head in the space of a ground. I’m sure (Cooper) will be ready to go (on Saturday).”

The Wallabies have until just before kick-off to name their final 23.
