Beale impresses as Wasps regain top spot

Kurtley Beale starred at fullback as his Wasps held off Leicester to regain top spot in English rugby’s Premiership.

Returning a week after being rested, the Wallabies ace led the game for metres gained and made two try-saving tackles in the 22-16 home win in Coventry.

The 28-year-old Australian sparked his side with a counter-attack down the left flank before outside centre Elliot Daly chipped and chased to score the opening try after three minutes.

Wasps crossed twice more to leap to a 19-0 lead after 29 minutes, but the Tigers fought back in the second half to reduce their advantage to six points.

Tigers inside centre Matt Smith looked set to reduce the deficit to one point in the 55th minute, but a Beale cover tackle forced his foot into touch as he crossed the line.

Two minutes later, Leicester broke through the Wasps line via replacement forward Lachlan McCaffrey before he was brought down in a strong tackle by Beale, who made his return from a seven-month injury lay-off last month.

The win hands Wasps a three-point lead atop the English Premiership standings with 11 wins, three points ahead of second-placed Saracens.
