Sydney Roosters vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

Sydney Roosters are beginning to assert themselves on the premiership, while the once-were-heavyweight Warriors are in the midst of an alarming slide as they confront a daunting road trip.

The Roosters have improved to 5-4 after blitzing the Dragons 60-18 and overrunning an injury-stricken Broncos 40-18. James Tedesco and Angus Crichton were in vintage touch in Brisbane, but there’s few in the Tricolours line-up not regularly contributing at a high level.

The attacking woes of last season now seem a distant memory, though they have leaked at least 18 points in six straight games.

The Roosters have four big ins with Daniel Tupou, Jared Waerea-Hargreave, Victor Radley all and Spencer Leniu all returning. Junior Pauga, Sitili Tupouniua, Egan Butcher and Siua Wong drop out.

What’s going on with the Warriors? Absolutely flying with the best defensive record in the comp after five rounds, the NRL’s darlings have spiralled with a lucky draw against Manly and three increasingly dismal losses to the unfancied Dragons, Titans and Knights – all as warm favourites.

Their clinical attack looks staid, discipline has been shocking and goal-line defence has been woefully subpar.

Andrew Webster has resisted making changes to his struggling line-up. Jazz Tevaga returns from injury, Bunty Afoa moves to prop and Mitch Barnett shifts to the Kurt Capewell’s (calf) second-row spot.

The Warriors are on a seven-match losing streak against the Roosters, all by eight points or more. Last season the Roosters won a hard-fought Round 2 clash at Allianz Stadium 20-12 and shut out the Warriors 14-0 at Mt Smart in Round 9.

This is only the second time the Warriors have lined up as an underdog in 2024 (the other being agains the Storm in Round 2) – a reflection of their new status, as well as their recent underachievement to be 3-1-5. Their finals hopes are teetering already but they should relish the chance to go in as outsiders.

The Roosters are far from the finished article but are certainly playing with confidence and exuberance that will be difficult for a team down on form to handle.
