Gold Coast is second-last on the ladder and a vastly improved past month has produced just one win. But the Titans come into this derby in higher spirits than a North Queensland side that is on a four-match losing streak.
The Cowboys carved out a 35-22 win over the Titans in Townsville in Round 5, with the visitors belated revival aided by a sin-binning. Todd Paytens side hasnt won since, however, suffering twin heart-breakers at home to the Panthers (26-20) and Dolphins (28-26) in the past two weeks.
Failing to put away the under-strength Dolphins was especially frustrating for the Cowboys, who had nearly everything in their favour except for a high error count and an inability to resist goal-line pressure.
Des Haslers 1-7 Titans have been impressive since that Cowboys loss, taking the Raiders to golden point, and narrowly going down to Manly and Melbourne at home either side of a stirring Anzac Day upset of the Warriors in Auckland.
AJ Brimson was sensational in an agonising 22-20 defeat to the Storm that underlined the Titans can compete with the best when switched on.
The Titans will be without Tanah Boyd (wrist) with Chris Randall moving into the halves. Moeaki Fotuaika is back from concussion and Keano Kini comes onto the bench. Chad Townsend (knee) returns for Jake Clifford in the Cowboys only change.
The Titans have won three of their last four home games against the Cowboys, including a 22-13 victory in Round 22 last season.
The battle of the fullbacks will be huge. Scott Drinkwater scored two tries in the Round 5 clash and will be instrumental for the Cowboys along with Tom Dearden, while Brimsons return to fullback has been a wonderful palate-cleanser for the Titans.
The Cowboys are $1.70 favourites but this is anybodys. Its the biggest total points line of the season so far but with an overflow of attacking threats (and a propensity for defensive lapses) throughout both line-ups, its worth taking on.
