NRL’s last City-Country game, 2017: report

NSW Rugby League’s annual City v Country Origin clash will reportedly be scrapped after next year’s edition in Mudgee.

The fixture has been played since 1928 but its axing will be confirmed by the NRL on Monday, according to News Corp Australia.

The pre-State of Origin clash has often served as an audition for NSW representative duties, with 2016 Blues debutants Tyson Frizell (Country), Jack Bird (Country) and Josh Mansour (City) running out in Tamworth this year.

More than 8000 fans turned out for the match in May, won by City 44-30 in an upset.

Country Rugby League has long been resigned to the game being scrapped but hoped the NRL would compensate by bringing more games to the bush.

NSWRL and CRL officials will be joined by NRL head of football Brian Canavan at a press conference in Mudgee at 9.30am on Monday.
