Preview:

The last match of the round is between the Brisbane Broncos and the New Zealand Warriors, kicking off on Monday night, Suncorp Stadium at 7.00pm. The Broncos were defeated last week, with the Bulldogs winning 24-14 and the Brisbane side showing little promise. It’s all a bit up and down at the moment for the Broncos, who enjoyed a big win over the Titans the week before and need to bounce back this week.

The Warriors are also failing in the consistency stakes at the moment, managing to bounce back from a big loss to Penrith to record a great win over Newcastle last round. Their victory last week was the third win of the season for the New Zealand side, although they will have a hard time making it four against a Broncos outfit with a lot to prove and the home ground advantage on their side.

Teams:

Brisbane Broncos:

Nielsen wary of depleted Brisbane Broncos

Warriors centre Dane Nielsen remains wary of the threat posed by Brisbane despite the Broncos having four players out to State of Origin for the upcoming NRL round.

Centre Justin Hodges, back-rowers Sam Thaiday and Corey Parker, and utility Matt Gillett will be in camp with Queensland when Brisbane host the Warriors on Monday night.

Nielsen is confident the Warriors won’t fall in complacency but will take “a good attitude” with them to Suncorp Stadium.

“It’s always a dangerous one,” he said of facing opponents depleted by representative duty.

“You can never think because a team haven’t got some of their best players, they’re going to be easybeats.”

Nielsen said losing players at Origin time was a situation the Broncos were familiar with.

“We’ve seen in the past that the Broncos can still get a quality side out and compete at the top level,” he said.

“They’ve got a good bunch of guys and they have a lot of depth. They’ve dealt with this for a number of years and it’s just part of who they are.”

Nielsen, who spent five seasons with Melbourne before moving to the Warriors in the summer, played three matches for Queensland over the past two seasons, including the 2012 decider.

The 27-year-old admitted to disappointment at not being involved as the Maroons begin their bid for an eighth series victory in a row.

But he knew he wasn’t a realistic chance because of lack of playing time as a result of a rib injury, which meant the Warriors’ win over Newcastle last Sunday was his first match in six weeks.

“It’s hard to crack that side, let alone not even playing football,” he said.

“I’ll bide my time. I just want to get back to playing 80 minutes every week, getting my match fitness up and just doing my job for the Warriors.”
