Huddersfield have been dealt a body blow with the loss of free-scoring full-back Jake Mamo for the rest of the English Super League season.

The 23-year-old Australian has been a revelation since making a delayed debut for the Giants in April and played a significant role in their mid-season revival with 12 tries in his first eight appearances.

However, the former Newcastle Knights player damaged a foot in Huddersfield’s home win over St Helens last month and has since been diagnosed with a Lisfranc injury.

“It basically binds the two major bones in your foot and, when that ruptures, you don’t have the same support or ability to push off on the foot,” Giants coach Rick Stone told his weekly press conference.

“It keeps you motionless for a while and it’s going to take a long period of recovery to get him back.

“He’s had an operation and it’s going to keep him out for the rest of the year.”

Mamo, who missed the first two months of the season after sustaining an injury to his other foot in a motorbike accident while on holiday last September, will be a major loss after making such a big impact with the Giants.

“He’s been sensational, a welcome addition to our club and hopefully to the competition because everyone wants to see that type of player that puts bums on seats,” Stone said.

Stone will turn to former Wests Tigers utility back Jordan Rankin, who made his debut in the No.1 role in the Giants’ defeat at Salford on Sunday.

“When we got the opportunity to sign Jordan we weren’t quite sure where he was going to play when we were a bit more healthy a few weeks ago,” Stone said.

“Now we’ve lost Jordan Turner and Jake, it’s opened a couple of spots. I thought Jordan did all right at the weekend and he’s likely to have another go this week.”
