Inglis sweating on ankle injury

Greg Inglis will undergo scans on Sunday to determine the extent of the ankle injury the South Sydney superstar sustained in Saturday’s NRL All Stars clash on the Gold Coast.

Inglis left Skilled Park on crutches, his left ankle wrapped in a moonboot, after his Indigenous All Stars side went down 36-28 to the NRL All Stars in a thrilling encounter.

The Queensland centre fell to the floor in agony after scoring his side’s fifth try 12 minutes from time, but Indigenous coach Laurie Daley said Inglis was confident the problem was not too serious.

“He thinks it’s not too bad,” Daley said.

“It is the same ankle that he hurt last year but he will have scans to work out how bad it is, but he is OK about it.”

Daley’s side went down six tries to five in a free-flowing contest largely dominated by the referees who were keen to use the trial six-again tackle rule, rather than allowing kicks for touch when penalising players in the ruck.

Indigenous skipper Johnathan Thurston said he did not like the rule and hoped it would not make it into NRL.

“The refs relied on it a fair bit and we didn’t know a lot of the time what the penalty was for and they seemed to keep pinging us,” he said.

“As a result it was pretty fast out there and made you do a fair bit of defending.”

All Stars coach Wayne Bennett and captain Benji Marshall were more in favour of the ruling but agreed that the officials used it too often.

However, Bennett was cautious about the prospect of bringing it and the powerplay rule where a team loses two players for five minutes.

“We’ve got to be careful,” he said of any changes.

“It’s not the Big Bash, but this is an exhibition game and it’s good to use them in this environment but not in the NRL.”

Brent Tate also pulled up hurt for the NRL side.

The North Queensland centre, who has had three knee reconstruction in recent years, did not play the second half.

“He is good,” Bennett said.

“He has had a history long-term problems and he is just extra cautious so we left him out after halftime.”
