I’m myself not Hayne says Eels No.1 Sio

Former Parramatta star Luke Burt has been busy schooling Ken Sio on how to be himself at fullback, not Jarryd Hayne, as the Eels attempt to cover for the NSW superstar.

The Eels had big problems at the back two weeks ago against Penrith when they were first forced to make do without Hayne due to his State of Origin commitments. Justin Hunt and Sio both struggled with Jamie Soward’s kicking game at fullback in the heavy 38-12 round 12 loss.

With Hunt sidelined for the Eels for Sunday’s round 14 clash against Canterbury at ANZ Stadium, Sio will wear the Blue and Gold No.1 jersey and Burt, who played 264 games over a 14 year career for the Eels, has been busy schooling him on how to make it his own.

“Luke Burt has really been helping me, he has jumped on board and given me a lot of good advice,” Sio told AAP.

“About running the right lines, the right holes and being confident in what I do at the back when I have to ball in my hands.

“I have to be composed and not be too keen in defence and just wait for the play to unfold and play my role then.

“Jarryd’s Jarryd, I’m not going to be like him, I’m just going to play my own game.”

Sio said he was looking forward to getting the ball more at the back after moving from his customary right wing role.

“That’s what I’m looking at, it is going to be a big role to fill but I just have to bring my game to the position and do what I can do,” he said.

“I enjoy getting the ball more and trying to set up tries and learning how to play the position as well.

“I didn’t play much there in juniors so there is still that getting used to it.

“I have to keep that confidence up no matter what happens and give it my whole heart.”
