Murdoch brothers to square off in AFL

As one of nine Geelong players yet to miss an AFL game in 2014, Jordan Murdoch has taken some big strides this year.

But the gifted utility knows full well not to take that exalted position for granted at a club which has very high expectations born of a golden era including three premierships in the past eight seasons.

“You can’t really cement a spot in a side as good as Geelong,” the 22-year-old Murdoch told AAP ahead of Sunday’s home clash against St Kilda.

“I’ve been very lucky to play every game this year but my position is still up for debate every week as far as I’m concerned.

“You know you have to play your role every week and if you don’t do that, regardless of whether you’re a first-year player or an eight-year player, you’re going to find yourself back in the VFL.”

The fifth-placed Cats will start as red-hot favourites against the struggling Saints at Simonds Stadium, although Murdoch admitted their form had been up and down in recent weeks.

The last six matches have included comprehensive losses to flag fancies Port Adelaide, Sydney and Fremantle, narrow wins over Richmond and Carlton and a more impressive trouncing of North Melbourne.

In teenagers Darcy Lang and Brad Hartman, the Cats will blood two first-gamers against St Kilda.

“Both of them play up forward and in the midfield,” said Murdoch, who now has 30 senior games under his belt.

“They’re good contested-ball players and quite pacy.

“There’s a lot to like about both of them and we’ll expect them to play their role straight away and do it well.”

Sunday’s game at Simonds Stadium will mark the first time that Murdoch has squared off against his younger brother Brodie at AFL level.

After an interrupted pre-season, Brodie Murdoch broke into the St Kilda lineup three weeks ago and has held his place.

“We did play against each other in the VFL last year and neither of us did particularly well that day,” said Jordan Murdoch.

“We played all of our junior footy together and a bit of senior country footy as well.

“We loved playing together and playing against him is obviously a bit different.

“I might just have to give him a little elbow, just to let him know I’m out there.”

The 17th-ranked Saints have made two changes from the team which went down to the all-conquering Power last week, dropping tagger Clint Jones and Sam Dunell.

Star midfielder David Armitage is a welcome inclusion after recovering from a lacerated knee, while Jimmy Webster returns after serving a two-week club ban for an off-field indiscretion.
