Hayne needs “miracle” to play Origin

NSW winger Jarryd Hayne admits he needs a miracle to play in next week’s State of Origin series decider with his injured hamstring still causing him trouble.

Hayne hasn’t played since tearing his hamstring while turning out for Parramatta just 48 hours after playing a starring role in Origin I on June 5.

His importance to the Blues has been highlighted by coach Laurie Daley’s eagerness to bring him back into the squad even without a game under his belt in a month.

Daley said he wanted Hayne running at full pace by Wednesday, a deadline the Eels star doesn’t think he can meet.

“I’m not too sure at the moment, it’s not looking too good,” said Hayne of the injury on Monday.

“I’m going to do everything I can and leave it to the last minute to try and be right.

“Hopefully in the next 24-48 hours I can pull off a miracle.”

If deemed unfit, Hayne will be replaced on the wing in the Blues team by Newcastle’s James McManus who was named in an extended squad.

Hayne was one of three injury concerns for the Blues, with skipper Paul Gallen and back-rower Greg Bird both nursing foot injuries.

Gallen and Bird were both due to join the Blues camp at Coogee later on Monday.

Hayne said Sydney’s recent big wet had hindered his recovery.

“Last week the weather didn’t help with how wet the track was – the last three sessions were real wet and boggy and I couldn’t really get much speed and volume,” he said.

“It was just putting that extra bit of pressure on my hammy which didn’t help.”

Asked if he could nurse the leg through the Origin contest at less than full fitness, Hayne was adamant he would not jeopardise the team by attempting it.

“If I play I’ll be 100 per cent,” he said.

“I know myself I need to be 100 per cent. I wouldn’t go into a game if I wasn’t, especially in this kind of arena.”
