Gavet released by NZ, to link with Knights

Prop James Gavet is expected to be unveiled by Newcastle in the coming days after he was formally released by the Warriors.

A day after the former Canterbury, Brisbane and Wests Tigers forward took to social media with a cryptic post hinting at his exit, Gavet was released on Friday from the final year of his NRL deal.

It’s understood the 29-year-old has not officially put pen to paper with the Knights but his addition will be shortly announced by the club.

“James has been a good servant of this club and always gave it his all on the footy field,” Warriors chief executive Cameron George said.

“But he’s been given a great opportunity and we wish him all the best for the future.”

Gavet’s signature will bolster the Knights’ forward depth with the club also believed to be on the verge of signing NSW and Australian prop David Klemmer from Canterbury.

With Nathan Brown’s roster also boasting Queensland forward Tim Glasby and emerging twin brothers Daniel and Jacob Saifiti, the Knights will have significant forward power at their disposal.

On Thursday, Gavet posted to Instagram a video of himself outside Warriors HQ with the message “Thanks for the ride fam OUTTA-HERE!!!”

Gavet has played 56 NRL games since making his debut with the Bulldogs in 2012.
