Cordner to test calf in opposed session

Boyd Cordner’s calf will undergo its first major test when the NSW captain takes part in an opposed session in Kingscliff on Thursday night.

Cordner’s status for next week’s State of Origin decider is in some doubt after the Blues second-rower picked up an injury late in their game two defeat and hasn’t trained since.

However after sitting out the team’s first training run on Wednesday, Cordner is expected to lace up the boots in a closed session against an unknown side.

The Blues faced Gold Coast’s under-20s team in the corresponding run before game one.

Forward Tyson Frizell (back) and fullback James Tedesco (ankle) are all but certain to play after training on Wednesday, though they were protected from contact.

“Tyson trained yesterday and done the full session, he was fine. I think Boyd is going to train today, so I guess today we’ll know (after that),” forward Josh Jackson said on Thursday.

“All the boys that are in doubt or carrying little injuries, their body language and the way they’re going about it suggests to me they’ll be fine to go.”

Jackson denied it would be a risk carrying an underdone Cordner or Frizell into the game.

“With the squad we’ve got, we’ve got the depth to cover those guys if it were to happen. You’ve got Jack Bird on the bench that can pretty much play any position on the field,” he said.

“You’ve got Wade Graham on the bench who’s the same – he’s really versatile. I’d think if that were to happen, we’d be covered for it. But everything suggests those guys will be fine to go.”

Jackson said he was prepared to step into the captaincy role should Cordner fail to recover in time, but insisted there were other options coach Laurie Daley could opt for.

“There’s a lot of guys here that could do the job, a lot of experienced guys like James Maloney and Aaron Woods – he’s the captain of his club.

“Wade Graham if he comes into the side for Boyd, he’s done it for the Sharks before. For me I just do the stuff on the field and let my actions do the talking.”
