Young Brisbane Broncos winger Jharal Yow Yeh may have to wait up to a week before surgeons can operate on his badly broken leg.
The 22-year-old, who suffered a compound fracture and dislocation in the Broncos’ comeback win over South Sydney in Perth on Friday night, arrived home on Sunday and was immediately admitted to Brisbane Private hospital where his mother and grandmother were waiting.
It’s expected to take a week for the swelling to subside and to make sure there is no infection before leading orthopaedic specialist Dr Peter Meyers operates to insert pins and a plate in his lower leg.
There’s a possibility he could require two operations.
Broncos football operations manager Andrew Gee, who along with the club’s doctor accompanied Yow Yeh on the flight back from Perth, said on Monday the outlook for the Origin and Test winger was positive.
He said it was not possible to predict how long Yow Yeh would be on the sidelines until after he had the surgery.
Dale Copley and Dane Gagai, who went to Perth hospital in the ambulance with Yow Yeh on Friday and kept texting updates to the team on his progress, are battling for a wing call-up against the Dragons on Friday.
Copley trained on the left wing for some of Monday’s session with Gerard Beale on the right side where he scored two tries when switched to Yow Yeh’s side in the second half against South Sydney.
