The last game of the round is between Melbourne and Collingwood, with six teams having byes this weekend. This game kicks off on Monday, 3.20pm at the MCG. This match is rivaling the GWS vs Geelong game as the most uneven game of the round, in what is normally a highly anticipated Queen’s Birthday encounter. The Demons are simply shocking at the moment, with an injury to James Frawley only likely to make things even worse. While the nature of the occasion could lift Melbourne, it’s fair to say even the biggest Demons fans wont be optimistic for a win.

AFL Demons aim to shine on big stage

Melbourne AFL coach Mark Neeld hopes the big stage will bring out the best in his young side after a week of drama on and off the field.

The Demons are sitting 17th on the table with a 1-9 record and bookmakers are offering $21.00 on the home side scoring a win over eighth-placed Collingwood in Monday’s Queen’s Birthday clash at the MCG.

While Neeld survived the axe following Monday’s board meeting, club president Don McLardy said the football department would face ongoing assessments.

Neeld has preached the need for the patience with his developing list and says last week’s 95-point loss to ladder leaders Hawthorn was a learning experience.

“You point out things that worked, some things that didn’t,” Neeld told a media conference on Friday.

“When the effort’s there, that can be frustrating and disappointing that you can’t get closer on the scoreboard.

“The players are also quite intelligent. They know where Hawthorn sit.

“They know they’ve got a dozen A-graders who’ve all played over 150 games.

“We had a couple of meetings, the players ran them, and it was a really good discussion about the manner in which some of the Hawthorn boys go about their craft.

“For our footy club it doesn’t come any bigger at the moment than having a crack at Collingwood on a public holiday.”

Melbourne regain forward Colin Sylvia from suspension but former All-Australian defender James Frawley is out with a hamstring injury.

“It’s great for (20-year-old) Tom McDonald to come in and have a crack at (key forward Travis) Cloke on the big stage,” Neeld said.

“(It’s) good for someone like Jack Fitzpatrick … (who’ll) play as a key forward and play in the ruck against (Darren) Jolly.

“For Michael Evans and Matt Jones, there’s no better development than going into the middle and having a crack at (Dane) Swan and (Scott) Pendlebury.”

Neeld said the media focus on the club’s board meeting would have some impact on the players.

“(But) for our footy club it doesn’t come any bigger at the moment than having a crack at Collingwood on a public holiday,” he said.

Neeld defended the club’s selection of former Port Adelaide midfielder David Rodan, 29, in the 2012 draft.

Rodan had 24 possessions and 11 tackles against the Hawks.

“He was a pretty good for a pick number 87,” Neeld said.
