The last game of the round is between Melbourne and Collingwood, with six teams having byes this weekend. This game kicks off on Monday, 3.20pm at the MCG. This match is rivaling the GWS vs Geelong game as the most uneven game of the round, in what is normally a highly anticipated Queen’s Birthday encounter. The Demons are simply shocking at the moment, with an injury to James Frawley only likely to make things even worse. While the nature of the occasion could lift Melbourne, it’s fair to say even the biggest Demons fans wont be optimistic for a win.

Demons will be okay in AFL: Brad Scott

North Melbourne coach Brad Scott says he’s staggered by calls for struggling Melbourne to receive salary-cap concessions from the AFL.

Melbourne have a 1-9 record after 10 rounds and their coach Mark Neeld narrowly escaped the sack at a board meeting on Monday.

While Neeld’s position remains in the spotlight following Hawthorn’s 95-point win over Melbourne last weekend, Hawks’ president Andrew Newbold says the Demons require an expanded salary cap.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire last week suggested clubs like Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs should be handed an expanded salary cap of 110 per cent to allow them to chase some high-priced free agents.

Scott says it’s a knee-jerk measure and fails to take into account Melbourne’s player list.

“I’m staggered really,” Scott told reporters on Wednesday.

“The short-termism in this game is unbelievable.

“I understand we’re in a weekly cycle of winning and losing.

“We played St Kilda last week and people were asking me about St Kilda’s young list and they’re developing.

“In round two 2010, St Kilda beat us by 104 points and were one of the most-experienced sides in the competition.

“And now, three years later, we’re talking about them being really inexperienced.

“Things change rapidly.”

Scott says the Demons have plenty of young talent including Jack Viney and Jimmy Toumpas.

“Jesse Hogan’s the closest thing I’ve seen to (Brisbane’s) Jonathan Brown in a 17-year-old,” former Brisbane defender Scott added.

“The short-term reaction to some short-term pain is … talking about salary cap relief is just over-reacting.

“They’re going to be okay. They’ll keep fighting.

“They’ll get themselves out of this.

“Lots of sides have been down before and they come back and I’m sure Melbourne will.”
