Van Gisbergen takes McLaren factory role

New Zealand driver Shane Van Gisbergen is expanding his portfolio after signing as a McLaren factory GT driver for 2015.

The 25-year-old will merge his Australian V8 Supercar commitments with the new role as an endurance tester and driver for British manufacturer McLaren’s grand tour cars, mostly in Europe.

The new deal comes four days after Van Gisbergen announced he was changing V8 Supercar teams.

After finishing second in the championship for Tekno Autosports last year, he has signed a deal which will take him to Red Bull Racing following the end of the current season.

Van Gisbergen joins four other factory drivers at McLaren and the team says their racing commitments will be revealed over coming weeks.

McLaren GT managing director Andrew Kirkaldy was impressed by Van Gisbergen’s previous forays into endurance events.

“He has shown himself to be a great talent in Australia, and we are confident that he can recreate that success in Europe.”

Van Gisbergen described his new role as “pretty amazing” on Twitter.
